Location: Downtown Chicago (preferred) or Deerfield, IL — Onsite 3x/week Duration: 3-month contract to start; strong potential to convert to FTE Target Rate: $85/hour W2+ Benefits Portfolio Required: Yes – 2+ case studies showcasing project summaries and deliverables Job Description: The Principal Design Researcher will lead qualitative UX research efforts to improve digital product and service experiences for customers and employees. This person will plan and execute research across the product lifecycle, partnering closely with cross-functional teams and presenting actionable insights that drive decisions. Key Responsibilities: Conduct generative and evaluative qualitative research (e.g., interviews, diary studies, usability tests) Frame problem spaces and research opportunities across complex, omnichannel experiences Develop and execute research roadmaps in alignment with product and business strategies Facilitate cross-functional workshops and present findings to stakeholders using data storytelling Build journey maps, research artifacts, and insight repositories Mentor junior researchers and lead internal research capability-building initiatives Manage research logistics including screeners, discussion guides, stimuli, and participant recruiting Qualifications (Required): Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of UX research experience (10+ years strongly preferred) Strong portfolio with case studies that include methods, processes, and deliverables Experience with both discovery and validation research using various methods Expertise presenting insights that influence product and business strategy Familiarity with digital products: websites, mobile apps, kiosks, and/or enterprise tools Qualifications (Desired): Background in healthcare or retail strongly preferred Experience with employee tools, omnichannel experiences, and/or design consultancies Skilled in research tools like UserTesting, dscout, Qualtrics, and Optimal Workshop Agile environment experience and some exposure to quantitative methods Experience working with external vendors for recruitment Seniority level Seniority level Mid-Senior level Employment type Employment type Contract Job function Job function Research and Design Referrals increase your chances of interviewing at Swoon by 2x Inferred from the description for this job Medical insurance Vision insurance Get notified when a new job is posted.
